Report of the 1st round:
GROUP A: Friday, 30. 9. 2005, 07:30 p. m. : FSV Kroppach – Müllermilch Langweid 2:3
Unending drama! During the duel of the 2 German top clubs the suspense grew with each game, and the tension was palpable. The 1st match was characteristic for the entire game. Wu Jiaduo was leading in the 3rd set at deuce 1 against Aya Umemura with 10:5, and looked like the clear winner, when the Japanese managed to equalize and the then overtook her in the 5th set. The next match also brought the loss of a clear lead: Nicole Struse lead against Ding Yaping with 7:4 in the 5th set, but the Chinese turned the tables and the guests were then leading with 2:0. The equalizer still came, since Yang Xu Yan defeated Schreiner 3:2 and Wu Jiaduo secured the only safe victory of the evening with a 3:0 against Ding Yaping. The match was then concluded with a true climax, during which Struse Umemura lost in 5 hard fought over sets and the reigning European champion left the stage as extremely content winner. “All the games simply went wrong”, team manager Hans-Jürgen Bertling laments. “We’ve never seen such a drama. We can only hope for a good day during the rematch, in order to advance to the semifinals in this tough group.”
Points: Wu Jiaduo 1, Nicole Struse 1, Yang-Xu Yanhua 1, bzw. Aya Umemura 2, Ding Yaping 1;
Sunday, 2. 10. 2005, 06:30 p. m. : Sterilgarda TT Castelgoffredo – Statisztika Budapest 1:3
Hungary’s well known representative managed to continue it’s impressive statistics with a good start in Europe’s elite league. However it didn’t look it to begin with. Tamara Boros was unable to continue the fight against Mihaela Steff after a very closely lost 1st marathon set, and the Italian champion was in the lead. But the world’s current number 4 was a reliable asset. Li Jia Wei defeated Qi Rong in 5 tough sets, and in a similarly tense match Georgina Pota won against Stefanova. The winning point was made by Lo Jia Wei with an easy 3:0 over Mihaela Steff. With this away victory Statisztika Budapest now has a good chance of advancing to the semifinals.
Points: Mihaela Steff 1, bzw. Li Jia Wei 2, Georgina Pota 1;
GROUP B:
Friday, 30. 9. 2005, 07:30 p. m. : TTV Fürst Heerlen – TV Busenbach 0:3
With this highest possible away victory in the Sportpark Kamperheide the reigning German champion proved it’s role as favourite. But the match was closer than the numbers seem to show. The crucible was probably the guest’s good nomination tactic. To begin with, Gao Jun Tie Yana lost in a clear 0:3, therefore placing the pressure on Ni Xia Lian against Elke Wosik, who wasn’t able to deal with it and lost after a 2:1 lead in the 5th set. The deciding point was made by Busenbach’s shooting star Kristin Silbereisen against Nadine Bollmeier. Silbereisen stayed cool in the 3rd set, managed a 18:16 and secured the win in the end. Heerlen’s team manager Rene Daniels explains: “Our Gao Jun wasn’t able to deal with Tie Yana’s style of playing and it was unlucky for us that the match commenced with that game. Although Busenbach was the favourite, there were some possibilities for us.”
Points: Tie Yana 1, Elke Wosik 1, Kristin Silbereisen 1;
Saturday, 1. 10. 2005, 03:00 p. m.: Postas Matav Budapest – ASKÖ Erdgas Linz-Froschberg 3:1
The duel of last year’s Middle European Superleage finalist’s was pretty obvious this time. This was mainly due to the amazingly playing German citizen Jie Schöpp, who didn’t give Li Qiang Bing a chance and also made the winning point against “Susi” Liu Jia without losing one set. Iveta Vacenovska failed to make use of Linz-Froschberg’s chances. After “Susi’s” close win against Zhang Ying the Czech won the first set against Vivien Ellö with a safe 11:3, and continued to lead in the following 3 sets by some points, but never managed to win these sets. Obviously she wasn’t up to the pressure and had to concede the match to the cool and cleverly playing Hungarian. After this clear defeat the Upper Austrians can most probably forget the semifinals, and Postas will have the chance to advance in the matches against Heerlen.
Points: Jie Schöpp 2, Vivien Ellö 1, bzw. Liu Jia 1;
